South Island Swords
Learn to move like an Italian sword master. Build confidence, composure, and control in your movement. We teach Duello Armizare, based on the writings of 14th century Italian master Fiore dei Libieri.
Classes will emphasize good movement and solo training, with exploration through group and partnered drills
No equipment or training is necessary to start.

Head Instructor - David Barrett
David has been practicing longsword for fifteen years. He has completed Level One Instructor training at Academie Duello and continues to train in Duello Armizare, as well as other martial arts. As a coach and instructor, he also brings his experience and training in experiential education, outdoor leadership and mental health coaching. He is passionate about martial arts as a way to build our capacity to navigate uncertainty and conflict with grace.
He practices with longsword, rapier, sword and buckler, dagger, and empty hand, as well as Japanese two-handed sword.
Assistant Instructor - David Walz
βIs this the beginning of the end, or the end of the beginning?β This question from Sensei Mike Puckett is what led Dave to HEMA, upon receiving his black belt in Shotokan karate.
Dave has been training in martial arts for over thirty years, archery for twenty, and longsword for sixteen. As an instructor, he brings his deep knowledge of unarmed combat and movement. He is passionate about seeing people build skill and confidence through their study and practice, and find connection in the martial arts community.
He practices with escrima sticks, sword and shield, longsword, empty hand, and most recently, full armour.
